Five Riviera Maya Resorts in One Day:

Behind the Scenes of My Resort Site Inspections

From beautiful beachfront properties and luxurious adults-only escapes to family-friendly resorts and lively Mexican-inspired experiences, come along as I explore five very different resorts in Riviera Maya, Mexico. This is my Riviera Maya Resort Reviews.

One of the things I love most about being a travel advisor is having the opportunity to experience destinations and resorts firsthand. While photographs, descriptions, and online reviews are certainly helpful when planning a vacation, there’s something completely different about actually walking through a property, seeing the accommodations, experiencing the atmosphere, and getting a feel for what makes each resort unique.

During our September 2026 getaway to Mexico, I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a day visiting five resorts throughout Riviera Maya. On September 18, I traded my relaxing poolside routine at Dreams Puerto Morelos for a full day of resort site inspections, and what a day it was!

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Five resorts in one day? Yes, it was a busy schedule, but these are exactly the kinds of opportunities I appreciate as a travel advisor. Each property offered something different, and by the end of the day, I had a much clearer picture of which resorts I would recommend to different types of travelers.

From a resort that completely stole my heart to another that would be perfect for a younger crowd looking for a lively getaway, there was certainly no shortage of variety.

So, come along with me as I share my impressions of five very different Riviera Maya resorts!

Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa — The One That Stole My Heart!

I’ll start by saying that of all five properties I visited, Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa was the one that truly stole my heart. There was just something about this resort that appealed to me, particularly its beautiful beachfront, peaceful spa areas, and lovely surroundings.

When I visited, the resort was undergoing an extensive renovation project scheduled to finish around the beginning of November 2026. Unfortunately, that meant I wasn’t able to see the newly renovated reception area, as check-in operations had temporarily been moved into the large lobby. I did, however, get to see the Preferred Club check-in area, which was beautifully appointed and tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main arrival area. I really appreciated that separation, especially for guests looking for a quieter and more personalized welcome.

There were also improvements underway around the swimming pools, including work intended to make the facilities more accessible for guests with mobility challenges. It’s always encouraging to see resorts investing in accessibility, although I’d want to confirm the completed features before recommending specific accommodations to someone with particular mobility requirements.

One thing I noticed about the resort’s layout was that the main pools weren’t especially close to some of the accommodation buildings. For travellers who like to spend a lot of time in the water and want easy access from their room, I would certainly suggest considering a swim-out accommodation, depending on availability and budget.

Now, let’s talk about the spa because this was one of my favourite areas of the property! I absolutely loved the individual cabins used for massages and spa treatments. They had such a peaceful, relaxing feel, and I could easily imagine spending an afternoon enjoying a little pampering in those surroundings.

But the real highlight for me was the beach.

Unlike some other resorts in the Riviera Maya region, Dreams Tulum had a beautiful stretch of beach, and during my visit, I didn’t notice any sargassum. Of course, seaweed conditions can change depending on the weather and season, but the beach looked wonderful that day. There is also a reef that guests can snorkel directly from shore, which is a fantastic feature for anyone who enjoys exploring the underwater world. Motorized watercraft are not permitted in the area, helping maintain a more peaceful environment.

And then there was the chapel!

What a gorgeous little spot. I can only imagine how beautiful a destination wedding or vow renewal would be in such a lovely setting.

Because the resort was busy and undergoing renovations, I wasn’t able to inspect the guest rooms during my visit. I always want to be transparent about what I’ve actually seen, so I can’t personally comment on the accommodations. However, the areas I did visit certainly made a lasting impression.

My recommendation? Dreams Tulum would be high on my list for couples, families, and travelers looking for a beautiful beachfront resort with a relaxing atmosphere. Between the gorgeous beach, snorkeling opportunities, spa facilities, and lovely wedding chapel, this property certainly captured my attention.

And yes, I would absolutely love to return and experience it as a guest!

Barceló Maya Riviera — Luxury at Its Finest!

Our next inspection took us to Barceló Maya Riviera, and let me tell you, this property was impressive!

Barceló Maya Riviera is part of the enormous Barceló Maya Grand Resort complex, which consists of six resorts. When I say enormous, I mean it! However, what I found particularly interesting was how well the complex was designed. Rather than feeling like one giant resort, each property has its own distinct atmosphere and personality.

Barceló Maya Riviera is the adults-only property within the complex, making it a wonderful choice for couples and adults travelling together who appreciate a more luxurious vacation experience.

One of the first things that stood out to me was how exceptionally clean and well maintained everything was. The grounds, public areas, and accommodations all made a wonderful impression, and I also found the property very accessible during my tour.

I was fortunate enough to see some of the accommodations, and although the rooms weren’t particularly large, they were beautifully presented and very comfortable looking. Swim-out accommodations are also available, which would certainly appeal to travelers who enjoy having direct access to the water.

Another detail that impressed me was the attention given to beach maintenance. I learned that the resort arranges for seaweed to be cleaned from the beach nightly, which is a welcome effort in a region where sargassum can sometimes be an issue. While no resort can guarantee perfect beach conditions, it’s nice to know that maintaining the shoreline is a priority.

The size of the complex also means guests have access to a tremendous variety of amenities. One particularly interesting feature is the Maya Mall, a shopping and entertainment centre within the resort complex. There’s even a small casino!

And then there’s the whole concept of staying at one resort while enjoying certain facilities at neighboring properties. Depending on which Barceló resort you book, guests may have access to amenities at participating sister resorts. It’s worth understanding those privileges before booking, as access isn’t necessarily the same at every property.

For larger families, I particularly liked the idea of Barceló Maya Palace, while Barceló Maya Riviera offers a distinctly adults-only experience. Having several properties within one complex creates some interesting possibilities for travelers with different vacation preferences.

Now, I do want to mention something important.

Barceló Maya Riviera is not what I would consider a budget resort. This is a property I’d recommend to travelers who are looking for a more luxurious all-inclusive experience and are prepared to spend accordingly.

For those who appreciate beautiful surroundings, well-maintained facilities, upscale accommodations, and the convenience of a large resort complex, Barceló Maya Riviera is certainly worth considering.

Dreams Aventuras Riviera Maya — A Smaller Resort With a Convenient Location

Our third stop was Dreams Aventuras Riviera Maya, a property that offered a noticeably different experience from the first two resorts.

With approximately 300 rooms spread across seven floors, Dreams Aventuras is considerably smaller than some of the larger Riviera Maya resorts. For travelers who prefer a more manageable property rather than an enormous complex, that could certainly be appealing.

My initial impression was that the resort felt somewhat older and more dated than other Dreams properties I’ve visited. I also had the opportunity to see the accommodations, and while they were perfectly pleasant, they didn’t leave quite the same impression as the rooms I’d seen at some of the other resorts.

That being said, Dreams Aventuras has a couple of features that really stood out to me, particularly its spa and beachfront.

The spa was lovely and certainly one of the highlights of my visit. The beach was another strong point, thanks to its protected location, which helps shield the swimming area from some of the sargassum that can affect other parts of the coastline. For guests who enjoy spending time in the ocean, this could be an important advantage.

One thing I did notice, however, was that accessibility could present challenges in certain areas of the resort. There were places where stairs would be difficult for travelers with mobility concerns, so this is definitely a property where I’d want to carefully review accessibility requirements before making a recommendation.

What makes Dreams Aventuras particularly interesting is its location within the gated community of Puerto Aventuras.

Unlike some of the more secluded resorts along the Riviera Maya coastline, this property offers convenient access to nearby attractions and activities. Puerto Aventuras is home to a marina, golf facilities, restaurants, and attractions such as Dolphin Discovery. Excursions can also be arranged from departure points close to the resort, making it a convenient base for travelers who enjoy getting out and exploring.

I actually think this is one of the property’s biggest advantages.

Not everyone wants to spend their entire vacation inside a resort. Some travelers enjoy venturing out, exploring nearby communities, and taking advantage of local attractions, and Dreams Aventuras offers a location that makes those experiences relatively convenient.

My recommendation? Dreams Aventuras could be a wonderful option for families or travelers looking for a more budget-friendly all-inclusive experience without feeling completely secluded. Although the property didn’t impress me quite as much aesthetically as some of the others, its protected beach, lovely spa, smaller size, and convenient location certainly give it some appealing qualities.

It’s a good reminder that the most luxurious resort isn’t always the best choice for every traveller.

Bahia Principe Explore Akumal — A Fantastic Choice for Families!

Our fourth inspection took us to Bahia Principe Explore Akumal, and the atmosphere here was completely different!

This was a lively, energetic, family-oriented resort, and I could immediately see why it would appeal to families travelling with teenagers and older children.

With 708 rooms and six room categories, Akumal is a substantial property and part of the much larger Bahia Principe Riviera Maya complex.

During my visit, the resort was operating at approximately 85% occupancy, and there was certainly no shortage of activity. However, despite the number of guests, I was impressed by how well organized everything was. It was busy, yes, but it didn’t feel chaotic, and that’s an important distinction when considering a resort for a family vacation.

One of the property’s biggest advantages is its beachfront location.

Unlike some of the neighboring Bahia Principe properties, where guests need to take a trolley to reach the ocean, Explore Akumal sits directly on the beach. For families who enjoy going back and forth between the pools, their rooms, and the shoreline throughout the day, that convenience could make a significant difference.

And speaking of the beach, I thought it was beautiful!

I also had the opportunity to enjoy lunch at the resort’s enormous buffet, and the food was absolutely delicious. The buffet area was huge, which makes sense considering the number of guests the resort accommodates, and I was impressed with both the food and the overall organization.

Akumal is part of a larger complex where guests may enjoy selected amenities at participating sister resorts, depending on their booking privileges. It’s another example of how a resort complex can provide additional variety, although it’s important to understand which facilities are included before making a reservation.

An Important Update About Bahia Principe Akumal

There have been some significant changes to the Bahia Principe brand, and these are worth mentioning for anyone who has stayed at one of these properties previously.

Bahia Principe is now part of the Hyatt Inclusive Collection, with the brand offering two distinct concepts: Explore, designed primarily for families and groups, and Escape, offering adults-only experiences.

As part of the changes taking effect in late 2026, Explore Akumal transitioned away from its former adults-only accommodation and exclusive dining sections, becoming a family-focused property throughout.

Another important change concerns à la carte dining. For stays beginning November 1, 2026, the standard arrangement is generally three à la carte dinner reservations per seven-night stay, subject to availability and the terms of the booking. Some earlier reservations may retain different dining privileges, so this is something worth confirming before travelling.

These are exactly the kinds of details that can make a difference when choosing a resort, particularly for returning guests who may remember a different experience.

My recommendation? Bahia Principe Explore Akumal would definitely be one of my choices for families, especially those travelling with teenagers or older children who enjoy a lively atmosphere, plenty of activities, and a beautiful beachfront.

Despite operating at a high occupancy level during my visit, the resort was impressively organized, and the delicious buffet lunch certainly didn’t hurt my overall impression!

Bahia Principe Escape Tequila — Let the Good Times Roll!

Our fifth and final inspection brought us to Bahia Principe Escape Tequila, and what a fun way to finish the day!

If you’re looking for a quiet, secluded resort where the highlight of your afternoon is listening to the waves, this probably isn’t going to be your first choice. However, if you enjoy a lively social atmosphere, Mexican culture, entertainment, and meeting new people, then Escape Tequila might be exactly what you’re looking for!

This adults-only property has approximately 360 rooms in a single room category, making it a smaller and more straightforward accommodation choice than some of the larger resorts in the complex.

What really sets Escape Tequila apart is its personality.

The entire resort is designed around Mexican culture and entertainment, creating a fun, energetic atmosphere that would particularly appeal to a younger adult crowd. During my visit, the resort wasn’t quite as busy as Explore Akumal, but there were certainly enough guests around to give it that lively, social feeling.

I would definitely describe this as the party resort of the complex, although there’s more to its atmosphere than simply music and socializing. The Mexican-inspired setting, entertainment, and dining concepts all contribute to the experience.

One thing to keep in mind is that Escape Tequila isn’t directly on the beach. Guests need to take the resort trolley to reach the shoreline, which is something I’d point out to anyone who prefers having the ocean just steps from their room.

Dining With a Difference

Escape Tequila offers an interesting selection of dining experiences that fit its playful personality.

Cozumel is the main buffet restaurant, featuring live cooking stations and a combination of international and Mexican cuisine. For something different, Nikkei Mashua offers Japanese-Peruvian fusion, while The Smoked focuses on Texas-style barbecue and slow-cooked meats.

And then there’s La Casita!

This was one of the dining concepts that really caught my attention. La Casita offers casual poolside bites during the day before taking on more of a cantina atmosphere in the evening, with creative snacks and a lively social setting.

I also got a kick out of the self-service kiosks used for ordering food. It’s certainly a different approach from the traditional resort restaurant experience!

The property also features five on-site bars, along with access to selected amenities at participating sister resorts within the complex.

Of course, I was touring the facilities rather than staying overnight, so I didn’t have an opportunity to sample the restaurants personally. However, the variety and atmosphere were certainly interesting.

And I can’t possibly finish talking about Escape Tequila without mentioning the Spicy Confessions phone booth!

What a fun, quirky feature! I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw it, and it really seemed to fit the playful personality of the resort.

My recommendation? Escape Tequila would be my go-to suggestion for a younger adult crowd looking for a fun, social, adults-only getaway. Whether you’re travelling with friends or as a couple who enjoys entertainment and a lively atmosphere, this resort offers something quite different from the traditional quiet, romantic escape.

It’s full of personality, and that’s exactly what makes it stand out!

Five Resorts, Five Very Different Experiences — Which Would I Recommend?

After spending a full day touring these five properties, one thing became abundantly clear: there really is no such thing as the perfect resort for everyone.

Each property had its own personality, strengths, and considerations, and that’s what made this inspection day so valuable.

Dreams Tulum absolutely stole my heart. Between the gorgeous beach, peaceful spa areas, beautiful chapel, and overall atmosphere, this was the property that left the strongest personal impression on me. I would love to return and experience it as a guest.

Barceló Maya Riviera impressed me with its luxurious atmosphere, exceptionally clean facilities, beautiful accommodations, and the variety offered by its enormous resort complex. For adults seeking a more upscale vacation experience, this would certainly be a property worth considering, although it isn’t a budget-friendly option.

Dreams Aventuras Riviera Maya offered a different kind of appeal. While it felt older and somewhat dated compared with other Dreams properties I’ve visited, its smaller size, protected beach, lovely spa, and convenient location within Puerto Aventuras make it a practical option for travellers who want to explore beyond their resort without spending a fortune.

For families, particularly those with teenagers and older children, Bahia Principe Explore Akumal would be an excellent contender. The resort was lively, busy, and full of energy, yet impressively organized. Add in the beautiful beachfront and delicious buffet, and I can certainly understand why families would enjoy spending their vacations here.

And finally, Bahia Principe Escape Tequila would be my choice for younger adults looking for a fun getaway. Its Mexican cultural theme, playful entertainment, lively atmosphere, and distinctive dining experiences give it a personality all its own.

What I found most interesting was how different these resorts were, even when they belonged to the same hotel brand or larger resort complex.

A Dreams resort isn’t necessarily going to offer the same atmosphere as another Dreams resort, just as two properties within the Bahia Principe complex can provide completely different vacation experiences.

And that’s why choosing a resort based solely on photographs or the number of stars beside its name doesn’t always tell the whole story.

Why These Site Inspections Matter

As a travel advisor, I truly appreciate opportunities like these because they allow me to look beyond the beautiful marketing photographs and understand what a property is actually like.

Walking through the grounds, touring accommodations, seeing the beaches, exploring the facilities, and getting a feel for the overall atmosphere gives me valuable insight that I can bring back to my clients.

It’s one thing to know that a resort has a beautiful swimming pool or several restaurants. It’s another to understand how far those pools are from the accommodations, whether the resort feels peaceful or energetic, how convenient the beach access is, and what type of traveller would genuinely enjoy staying there.

Of course, a site inspection is different from spending an entire week at a resort, and I always make that distinction. These observations reflect what I personally saw and experienced during my September 18, 2026 visits, rather than full overnight reviews of each property.

But what an opportunity it was to explore five very different resorts in one day!

And while I certainly enjoyed discovering what each property had to offer, Dreams Tulum will always have a special place in my heart after this particular adventure.

Now I just need to find an excuse to go back! 😂🌴
